Mother's Day is a holiday that is celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent.  The tradition of Mother's Day in the UK has its roots in the Christian holiday of Mothering Sunday, which was a day when people would return to their "mother" church or cathedral.  Over time, this holiday evolved into a day when people would visit their mothers and bring them gifts and flowers.

In the UK, the modern celebration of Mother's Day began in the early 20th century, when a woman named Constance Penswick-Smith started a campaign to create a day to honour and celebrate mothers.  Her efforts were supported by other women's groups and eventually led to the creation of Mother's Day as we know it today.

A little snap of me and Emily (Bemble) baking some treats last year :) - she now has slightly more teeth!

Today, Mother's Day in the UK is a day when people show appreciation for their mothers and mother figures by giving them gifts, cards, and flowers. It is a day to celebrate the love and sacrifices that mothers make for their children and families.

We're hoping to expand our greeting card range over the next few years, to include some Mother's Day cards.  However until that happens, the majority of our products would make fabulous gifts for mum's.

A definition of ‘gift’ is “the transfer of something without the expectation of payment”.  It is an expression of love or friendship, and people receiving a gift receive a psychological boost which apparently releases endorphins to the brain producing feelings of happiness, pleasure and joy.  I kind of feel this way about GIVING a gift too to be honest, I love shopping for that perfect present.

Some of our most treasured items are often gifts from relatives or friends.  There is a special association between the giver and the gift, especially when it’s something that the receiver really appreciates and it makes their day.

As a mother of two, I personally love to cook and bake and I'm passionate about creating delicious and nutritious meals for my family.  I know I'm not alone in this, and many other mothers around the world enjoy experimenting with different recipes and ingredients to create meals that are both healthy and tasty. Some mums also enjoy baking, creating cakes, cookies, and other treats for special occasions or just for fun.

Over the years, myself and my husband have had to become quite creative in the kitchen, as feeding our children isn't always straightforward as they have a myriad of food intolerances.  Regardless, we've been rather creative over the years... and just for fun... here is a sneak peek at a few of our past efforts :)  (and yes, my husband is almost as crazy as I am!)

For mums like me, who love to cook and bake, spending time in the kitchen can be a relaxing and enjoyable activity.  It allows them to express their creativity and provide nourishing meals for their families. Cooking and baking can also be a great way for mums to bond with their children, teaching them new skills and sharing the joy of creating something together.

When you order from us, you can even choose to have your gifts wrapped, and posted out all ready to give to the recipient.  Such a time saver if you're busy like we are!  We post out orders either the same day or the next day, and will offer a free upgrade to first class post in the week leading up to (UK) Mother's Day!  Just be sure to tick the gift wrapping option on the product page.

For mum's who like to cook and bake

Our chopping boards are really popular gifts!  In fact a set of a large and mini board make a wonderful Mother's Day gift - one for mum, and one for son / daughter to chop on!  Often the most cherished gifts are the unexpected ones, the items we thought we didn’t necessarily need but turn out to be really useful or surprisingly beautiful.  Someone actually gave me a great tag line idea for our chopping boards ... "You didn't know you NEEDED a new chopping board, until you saw a Bean and Bemble chopping board" - LOVE THAT ;)

Our aprons and kitchen tea towels are the perfect choice, please click here to view all our kitchen textiles.

We have plenty of non-kitchen items too.  If you're looking for a little add-on to go with a beautiful bunch of flowers, our pocket mirrors are so useful and come in 9 different designs.

Paired with our cosmetic or makeup bags, these are gifts that will make her feel really special.  They are so useful, 100% cotton and beautifully made in the UK.

Other gift ideas

If you don't think any of our products suit your mum, then that's ok - we have some other ideas!  There are many thoughtful gift ideas for mums, depending on her interests and preferences.
 .

Relaxation gifts:

For mums who need some relaxation, consider a spa day or massage, a scented candle or diffuser, a cozy blanket, or a subscription to a meditation or yoga app.  Check out CAHM Collective for some amazing candles and diffusers that smell simply divine (they're made in the UK too!)
 .

Food and drink gifts:

For mums who love food and drink, consider a cooking or baking class, a gourmet food basket or subscription box, a cookbook from her favourite chef or cuisine, or a gift certificate to a favourite restaurant.  Yumbles has an amazing selection of foodie gifts available for UK posting.
Technology gifts: For mums who love technology, consider a new e-reader, tablet, or smartphone, a smart home device, or a subscription to a streaming service.
 .

Experience gifts:

Experiences can create lasting memories, consider tickets to a concert, theatre, or sporting event, a hot air balloon ride, a cooking class or wine tasting, or a weekend getaway.
 .

Jewellery:

Something that she'll cherish for years to come, jewellery is a timeless way to relay your affection while showing your appreciation for all the maternal figures in your life.  Some gorgeous options we personally recommend, can be found at Coco Wild or Little Lovers

Ultimately, the most important thing is to choose a gift that comes from the heart and reflects your appreciation for your mum.
